What Data Breaches Mean for You and SLFCU

5/28/2015

Data breaches at retail merchants are occurring more frequently than in the past. However, members can be assured that SLFCU is ready to help if your personal or financial data is compromised. We will do everything we can to help you avoid becoming a victim of identity or account theft, typically by closing the compromised account and/or issuing you a new debit or credit card.

Most merchants follow their own data security standards; however, as multiple data breaches over the last two years have shown, merchant standards are not fail safe. If your debit or credit card data is breached at a merchant, the cost of card replacement or account reimbursement is paid by SLFCU and not by the retailer where the breach occurred.

Credit unions around the country are encouraging Congress to pass legislation ensuring merchants meet a national standard for protecting the financial data they collect when you make a purchase and that they are held liable for breaches of their systems.

SLFCU is here to help you and your family if a breach does occur when you use your debit or credit card. If you have questions or concerns about account security, call 800.947.5328 or 505.293.0500, or visit any branch to speak with a member service representative.
