Preventing Credit and Debit Card Fraud on 12/19/2013

It’s an unfortunate fact that card fraud is running rampant. As card fraud increases, so do SLFCU’s efforts to combat it. Card fraud costs financial institutions hundreds of millions of dollars each year. The safeguarding of our members’ credit and debit cards is a top priority. SLFCU works with one of the nation’s largest card fraud detection systems to protect your assets.

HOW FRAUD DETECTION WORKS

Your card activity is monitored for fraud 24 hours a day, seven days a week. A fraud alert may be triggered if you use the card outside of your normal patterns or if you attempt to use your card at a high-risk merchant. Your transaction may not process and/or you may receive a call from a card security detection representative asking you to confirm the activity. If you are concerned about the legitimacy of this call, you may call the number on the back of your card to confirm. If the transaction is valid, and as soon as the activity is verified, your card will work again. If the transaction is fraudulent, the representative will close the card and order a replacement.

WHY YOUR CARD MIGHT BE DECLINED

Fraud alerts are not always the cause of a failed transaction. If your card transaction fails, please do the following:

  • Run the card again. If the card reader is dirty, your card information may not have been read properly. Try swiping your card more slowly. If your card information was entered manually, perhaps the card number, expiration date, or security code was keyed incorrectly.
  • Ensure the funds are available by checking your account in online or mobile banking.
  • Call the customer service number on the back of your card. The service representative can tell you if your card stopped working because you hit your limit or because fraud is suspected.

IF YOU ARE TRAVELING

Call 505.293.0500 or 800.947.5328 to let us know where you’ll be, the dates of your trip, and a cell phone number where you can be reached while you’re traveling. We’ll note your travel plans on your account, reducing the possibility of your transactions being denied. However, it is still possible that your card activity will trigger an alert or denial. A fraud analyst will review the activity and your travel notes, but it still may be necessary for the analyst to call you to verify the card activity.
