Introducing Robert Chavez, SLFCU President/CEO

As we announced in September 2013, Christopher Jillson, President/CEO of Sandia Laboratory Federal Credit Union, has retired as of February 28, 2014. As of March 1, 2014, Robert Chavez is the Credit Union’s new President/CEO.

Chavez has overseen the Credit Union’s operations since 2000 and has served as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer since 2002. He holds a BBA degree from New Mexico State University and an MBA from the University of New Mexico, and has more than 27 years of experience in financial institutions. He is active in the community, having served on the Board of Trustees for the National Museum of Nuclear Science and History and as a member of the Sandia Science & Technology Park Advisory Council. Chavez is a graduate of both the Leadership Albuquerque (1995) and Leadership New Mexico (2008) programs.

Within the credit union industry, Chavez has served on the Board of Directors for the Credit Union Association of New Mexico (CUANM), actively volunteered on the Governmental Affairs Committee (GAC) for CUANM, and currently serves on a Regional Advisory Committee for the National Association of Federal Credit Unions (NAFCU).

In 2012, Chavez completed a two-year assignment on i3, the Filene Institute’s credit union think-tank, during which he worked to identify and evaluate innovative concepts to bring to the credit union market.

SLFCU Board Chair Joseph Fink said, “Robert Chavez has proven himself to be a capable and intelligent leader, overseeing most areas of the Credit Union for the past 14 years. We’re confident that he has the experience and vision to guide SLFCU into the future.”

A Word from Robert Chavez

I am honored and excited to have been selected as SLFCU’s new President/CEO. I am extremely fortunate to follow Chris in leading such a successful organization. We continue to perform well in our member satisfaction and loyalty scores, and we have earned recognition for being one of the Albuquerque Journal’s Top Places to Work. Financially, we’ve weathered many economic storms and remain strong and resilient. So my selection is an endorsement that we’re doing what’s best for the organization, our member-owners, and our employees.

The environment in which we operate is changing constantly. The technology and the needs, desires, and expectations of our members will also continue to evolve. As we encounter these types of changes, we’ll have to adjust our organization to respond and adapt. Our purpose and mission, however, will remain constant. We’ve been successful primarily because we have engaged employees who have long supported our ongoing pursuit of member satisfaction and our desire to provide valuable products and services in a quality manner. This has been and will continue to be the cornerstone of what SLFCU is all about.

We still strive to be the best in our markets – Albuquerque and Northern California – at providing an exceptional experience for our members. It’s an experience where the organization and its employees value and treasure the special bond maintained with each member, where each interaction is deemed superb by the member.

If you have any thoughts you’d like to share, please let me know. I look forward to getting to know many of our valued members in the years to come.

A Word from Chris Jillson

It has been an honor to have worked at Sandia Laboratory Federal Credit Union for the past 30 years. It has been an incredible ride working with some of the best people, and a ride filled with great experiences. For the past 25 years I have had the privilege of leading this truly outstanding organization. It is time, however, to move on to the next phase in life.

I wish to commend and thank all of the volunteers I have served with, as well as each of the board chairpersons I served. I thank you for the privilege, the vision, and the leadership, and for all that you have given me.

My thanks also to the SLFCU staff, for you all have been persistent and professional in pursuing whatever I have requested of you. I am convinced that, in the future, SLFCU will be even more important to the financial lives of our members because of all your efforts.

And finally, thanks to all of our loyal members. Your high expectations have motivated SLFCU to continually improve our service and our products. I have enjoyed getting to know many of you over the years, and I wish you all the best.
